The appointment followed the resignation of the former Chairman of the Council, Prof Gabriel Olawoyin by the Governor. Ajibola has been a member of the Governing Council of the institution.

The statement read, “The Governor of Osun and Visitor to the Osun State University, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has approved the appointment of Prof.Obafemi Ajibola as the new Chairman, Governing Council of the Osun State University.

Although the statement was silent on the reason Olawoyin resigned his position, but it is not unconnected with the intractable crisis between the council headed by Olawoyin and the university management headed by the sacked Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bashir Okesina. The VC was sacked last week.

Aregbesola had set up a Visitation Panel headed by the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola to investigate the crisis rocking UNIOSUN.

The panel recommended the termination of appointment of Okesina; the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso; Registrar, Dr. Julius Faniran and Bursar, Mr. Bayo Lasisi.

The same panel also recommended the dissolution of the Governing Council but stated that the council should be allowed to still be in place until the process of the appointment of a new vice chancellor of the institution was completed.

The Visitor accepted the recommendations but Olawoyin, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria resigned his appointment.
