List of UNIMED Postgraduate Courses

The School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has published the list of postgraduate programmes on offer for the 2022/2023 academic session.

(1.) CENTRE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND BIOMEDICAL EDUCATION (CeHPBE)

1. Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert.) in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual, minimum of 1 semester and maximum of 3 semesters)
2. Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip.) in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual, minimum of 3 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters)
Options in:
i. Biomedical Education
ii. Health Professions Education/Medical Education
3. M.Sc. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual, minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 9 semesters)

Admission Requirements for the Programmes

1. PG. Cert. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual)
The programme is opened to candidates who possess a National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or Bachelor degree in any Health, Allied and Health related disciplines from a university recognized by the Senate of the University.

2. Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual)
i.) The programme is opened to candidates who possess a National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or Bachelor degree in any Health, Allied and Health related disciplines from a University recognized by the Senate of the University.
ii) Admission is also opened to applicants with any of the above qualifications and who has a PG. Cert. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education of UNIMED or its equivalent recognized by the university. Such applicants will be exempted from first semester courses.

3. M.Sc. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual)
i) The programme is opened to candidates who possess a Bachelor degree (minimum of 22) in any Health, Allied and Health related disciplines from a University recognised by the Senate of the University.
ii) Admission is also opened to applicants with any of the above qualifications and who has a PG. Dip. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education of UNIMED or its equivalent recognized by the University. Such applicants will be exempted from course work of first and second semesters.

(2.) INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED CLINICAL SCIENCES EDUCATION

MSc in HEALTH LAW AND POLICY

The UNIMED Postgraduate Courses and programmes are designed to:

• enhance the knowledge and competencies of health professionals, service managers and legal practitioners wishing to explore career paths pertinent to the discipline of Health Law and Policy.
• enhance knowledge in the field, with emphasis on international best practice in national and global Health Law.
• nurture research and innovation in Health Law and Policy in Nigerian academia.
Graduates of the programme will be expected to: • have knowledge of contemporary issues and recent advances in Health Law and Policy.
• deploy this knowledge to inform the formulation, implementation and monitoring of health policy and health services delivery.
• be able to facilitate the development of legal frameworks underpinning clinical practice.

The programme comprises a wide range of courses to be delivered over one calendar year.
Taught courses will be conducted over two semesters, then students will have 3 months to
work on and submit a dissertation. Hybrid instruction will be through a combination of virtual
and face-to-face interactions. Online teaching and learning through the University’s e-
learning resources will be complemented by face-to-face teaching over two weekends per
semester. Each student shall make two 1-hour seminar presentations.

Admission requirements

Applicants for admission into the Master’s degree programme shall possess:

(a) a first degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Law or any other discipline in the Health Sciences and Social Sciences (MBBS, BDS, LLB, B.Sc 2:2 or higher) or
(b) a registrable professional qualification and a minimum of two years’ post-qualification field experience; or
(c) any other qualification deemed equivalent and acceptable by the Board of the Postgraduate School and approved by the University Senate.

(3.) SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH UNIMED Postgraduate Courses

1. PUBLIC HEALTH: PGD, MPH, MSc, MPhil, DrPH, DrCH, PhD (PH)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of UNIMED or other Universities/Institutions recognized by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee. Candidates should be prepared for a Test of Proficiency in English Language and /or interview / subject test as may be indicated by the Faculty/Department running the programme.

Post graduate programmes in Public Health

A. PGD (One calendar year)
PGD Public Health
PGD Health Statistics
PGD Environmental Health Safety and Management
PGD Data Science and Bioinformatics
Bachelor degree in disciplines not necessarily health related with a minimum of Third Class or Higher National Diploma (with a minimum of lower credit) or its equivalent.

B. MPH/M.Sc. Public Health Programmes (One calendar year)

Graduates of Medical and Health-focused disciplines who are on relevant professional registers; Holders of PGDPH or its equivalent or Graduates of Allied Health Sciences with a minimum of second class lower. Master in Public Health (MPH) specializes under the following options:
a) Epidemiology & Biostatistics
b) Health Policy and Management (HPSM)
c) Health Policy and Management (HPSM)
d) Population, Family & Reproductive Health e) Health Promotion & Behavioural Sciences

C. M.Phil & M.Phil/PhD Public Health

Graduates of MPH/M.ScPH programmes with 50-59.9 % aggregate score; or Holders of the Part I of the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College of Physicians in Public Health.

D. DrPH / DrCH degree (Three calendar years)

Clinically qualified (Medical and Nursing) graduates with an MPH degree with PhD grade or M.Phil in Public Health; or Holders of the Part II of the Fellowship National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College of Physicians in Public Health or other clinical disciplines.

E. PhD Public Health Degree (Three calendar years)

Holders of MPH or M.ScPH degree with PhD grade; MPhil in Public Health; or Holders of Part II Fellowship (or Part I with an MPH/M.ScPH) of the National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College of Physicians in Public Health may be exempted from selected course-works based on their prior fellowship training and specialty.

(4) FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES UNIMED Postgraduate Courses

Post graduate programmes in Anatomy

A. Master of Science (M.Sc.) An applicant for admission into the M.Sc. degree programme shall be a graduate of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Ondo, or any other approved University recognized by the UNIMED Senate, and with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Anatomy, or Medical/Clinical/Allied Health Sciences.
B. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil. & M.Phil./PhD) An applicant for admission to Master of Philosophy must be a holder of Master of Science degree in Anatomy with a weighted average of 50-59.9%. Candidates that are not UNIMED graduates may be required to satisfy the Department’s requirement for admission via an interview/examination or both.
C. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
Applicants for this programme should be:
Holders of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree with a research thesis in any of the areas of specialization stated above.
Holders of a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Anatomy with a minimum weighted average of 60%.

2. DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY
M.Sc., M.Phil, M.Phil./PhD & PhD in: –
Molecular Biology/Biotechnology
Cancer/Clinical Biochemistry
Drug Metabolism/Biochemical Toxicology
Plant/Ethno-medicinal Biochemistry

Post graduate programmes in Anatomy

A. M.Sc. Biochemistry Degree (Eighteen calendar months)
Bachelor degree in Biochemistry with at least a second-class lower division; or MBBS/BDS degrees with evidence of special bias for Biochemistry (at least a ‘B’ grade in Biochemistry in the Part 1 MBBS/BDS professional exams)
B. M.Phil. & M.Phil./PhD Biochemistry Degree (One calendar year)
Graduates of M.Sc. Biochemistry program but without a PhD grade (weighted average of 50-59.9%)
C. PhD Biochemistry Degree PhD Biochemistry (Three calendar years).
This is for graduates of M.Sc. Biochemistry with PhD grade or MPhil in Biochemistry degree holders with a minimum weighted average of 60%.

i. Candidates with first degree in Physiology or Medical/Clinical/Allied Health Sciences with at least a second class (lower division) from UNIMED or from any other approved University.
ii. Candidates with Professional qualification in Medicine (MBBS), Dentistry (BDS) or Veterinary Medicine (DVM) are also eligible.

B. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil & M.Phil/PhD)
Candidates who possess a Master degree in Physiology of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo or equivalent qualification from other Universities recognized by Senate with 50-59.9% weighted average.

C. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
i. Candidates with M.Sc. Degree in Physiology with a 60% weighted average from University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, or any other Universities recognized by the Senate
ii. Candidates with M.Phil. Degree of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

Duration of Programme
i. Full-Time – Minimum of 2 semesters and maximum of 4 semesters.
ii. Part Time – Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters
