Vice Chancellor steps to restore UNILAG SUG:
The vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Rahamon Bello has inaugurated a 43-man constitutional drafting committee for the Students’ Representative Council as part of steps to bring back the Students’ Union Government of the institution.
Describing the inauguration of the committee as marking a turning point in students’ unionism in the school, he said the committee would provide a framework for a full blown students’ union in the university.
“Before the commencement of this process, the management had taken tours of similar institutions around the world with the hope of gaining understanding of how students organized themselves to contribute to the smooth running of academic activities of the universities visited.
“Management had studied the recommendations of the reports of these study tours and shared the ideas with various student leaders all across the university to promote understanding of the concept and appraisal of the students’ union activities that is suitable for the students of the university.
“The feedback from the joint appraisal, my management, staff and students is encouraging. It is this that has encouraged the inauguration of the constitution drafting committee we are witnessing today”, he added.
Present at the inauguration ceremony are Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Professor Babjide Alo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Duro Oni amongst others. The membership of the committee were drawn from the staff and students.
