Reasons Why Obafemi Awolowo University Was Shut
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was shut over protests by students of the University. The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has shut the institution over protests by its students.
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Shut over “Violent Protest”
OAU students had since the increment of fee charges embarked on protests.
It would be recalled that OAU had increased the charges of its newly admitted students from N37,150 and N42,150 to N 82,400, N92,700 and N95,700 (acceptance fee inclusive), depending on faculties.
The charges of old students of the institution was also increased from N5,300, N7,800, N10, 300 and N12,800 per session to N19,700, N30,700 and N33,700 for different faculties respectively.
The management in a statement by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Dotun Awoyemi, accused the students of embarking on violent demonstration (Excerpts: Dailytimes).
The statement reads,
“The OAU wishes to announce that due to persistent disruption of normal activities and peace on campus as a result of violent demonstrations by students, led by the Student Union Executive, the University Authorities have decided to close down the University indefinitely in order to safeguard life and property on campus.
Consequently, all students are directed to vacate their Halls of Residence and the University premises immediately and not later than 12 noon on Thursday, 19th June, 2014.
Parents are hereby enjoined to ensure that their children/wards comply with this directive immediately.
