OAU PRO: Our Student Did Not Attempt To Flush Baby In Toilet

More facts have emerged regarding the undergraduate student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Oyinlola Diana Rotimi, who was accused of flushing her child in a toilet, as the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lanre Olarenwaju said the lady never intended to terminate the baby’s life but gave birth before due date, even as she was ignorant of child delivery symptoms.

Olanrewaju who made this known in a statement in Osogbo, said “the truth is that, there was a delivery of a baby boy by an inexperienced mother who, in her naivety, thought she was pressed by call of nature while she was actually in labour pains.”

“Prior to the child’s delivery, the young, inexperienced mother had experienced ‘thotimiat’, as she was bleeding and went to the toilet only to discover that something expelled into the water closet.

At that juncture, she called for help and when her friends heard it, they traced her to the toilet from their room. It was when a friend, Satope approached the toilet and found the baby that she called an elderly cleaner for assistance.”

“As at now, Diana Oyinlola’s parents are with her and she has started breast feeding the baby. During interaction, in the presence of the Matron, Mrs. M.G. Oyedele, Oyin stated that prior to the delivery, she was passing stool and had visited the toilet several times but the last time, she could not describe how she was feeling.”

“Thereafter, our security unit invited Satope for interrogation and confirmed the claim of Diana Oyinlola. Satope stated that Diana had to spend the night of June 18, 2013 on campus to enable her prepare for exams the next day as she was staying off-campus.

She stated that at mid-night, Oyin started complaining of stomach upset and was visiting the toilet frequently. She claimed that few minutes to 7:00am; the roommates suggested that she be taken to the university health centre to enable her write the examination in good health. “

“It was at that time, that Oyin went back to the toilet and Satope traced her and later discovered she had expelled what is now known as a baby in the toilet. She stated further that at the sight of the baby, she was stunned and called for help from the cleaner who later assisted in taking the child from the water closet to the health centre.”

“However, she stated that Oyinlola never intended to flush the baby but gave birth before her due date which falls in July, as she was only ignorant of the tell tale signs of child delivery being the first experience.”

“Meanwhile, father of the new baby has been confirmed to be a 400 level Student of Mechanical Engineering, OAU, Ile-Ife, ”he submitted.
