Neuroscientist Charges Nigerians to Make Their Brain Productive
The President of Ilorin Neuroscience Group, Dr. B. V. Owoyele, has charged Nigerians to engage their brain in productive mental activities to keep it from damage, saying, “Your brain is an essential organ, if it is dead, you are dead.”
Dr. Owoyele made the call last Monday (March 10, 2014) while speaking at the Brain Awareness Week Public Lecture organised by the Ilorin Neuroscience Group (ING) at the University of Ilorin Secondary School, Ilorin.
In the lecture, entitled “Brain: The Determinant of your Life”, the former Head of Department of Physiology, University of Ilorin, said that the brain, as part of the central nervous system, include the spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and peripheral nerve.
Dr. Owoyele said that the ING is a group of neuroscientists involved in studying various aspects of the brain in health and illness established six months ago with a view to creating impact among ourselves and the community as a whole.
He said, “The Brain Awareness Week is an inspirational global campaign that unites those who share interest in elevating public awareness about the progress and benefits of the brain and nervous system research.
Dr. Owoyele, disclosed that the key promoters of BAW are the DANA Foundation, Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) among other groups..
Highlights of the occasion included video presentation on brain, exhibition of relevant materials and quiz competition among four Secondary Schools in Ilorin, Kwara State.
At the end of the quiz competition, Chapel Secondary School, Ilorin, emerged the winner with 21 points, while University Secondary School, University of Ilorin, came second with 16 points and Queen Elizabeth Secondary School came third with 10 points.
