Lagos Assembly To Look Into Discrimination Between HND, BSc. Holders

AGAINST the pronouncement made by the Minister of Education, Professor Ruq’ayyatu Rufai, that only 500,000 students will gain admission into universities this year, the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, said it will soon consider the discrimination between the Higher National diploma (HND) and university degree holders in the country.

The majority leader, Honourable Dayo Adeyeye, stated this during a debate on matter of urgent public importance raised by Honourable Razaq Balogun, who drew attention to the minister’s statement.

Balogun, while quoting the minister to the effect that 500,000 out of 1.7 million students who sat for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) last week Saturday would be admitted, said it was time the federal and state governments looked at the education sector, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the admission hiccups.

Another lawmaker, Honourable Omowunmi Edet, urged the government to de-emphasise on paper certification and concentrate more on establishment of vocational centres.

She noted that the Federal Government owed the rest of the students who would be denied admission an explanation.

Most members condemned the decision of the Federal Government on admission procedure and urged the government to restructure the educational system in such a way to cater for the citizenry.
