ICAN Donates Half A Million Naira To Sponsor UNICAL Ph.D Students
The Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) has pledged the sum of half a million naira to aid Ph.D students who are members of the Institute as well as Accounting Students of the University of Calabar.
The National President of ICAN, Mr. Adedoyin Owolabi made the pledge when he led a team of ICAN officials on a Courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar in his office recently.
The National President of ICAN, Mr. Owolabi, said it has been observed that some students are hindered in their academic pursuit by financial inadequacies and hence the decision by the body to encourage such indigent ones especially those in their final year of study.
The 48th President of ICAN used the occasion to disclose that, there will be a scholarship scheme for students who make first class in Accounting and other related Departments of the Institution who are registered and bonafide members of the ICAN, adding that the mandate given to all Accountancy/Accounting students to credit Mathematics and English in either WAEC or NECO was to ensure proper regulation of the profession in Nigeria.
He commended the management of the University of Calabar for the excellent performance shown by the graduates of Accounting even as he appreciated the Vice Chancellor on the warm reception accorded him and his team.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Epoke who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Administration), Prof. Simon James Utsalo, expressed deep appreciation for the choice of Unical as one of the Universities to benefit from their scholarship scheme, and commended the body for also donating Journals to the University saying it will enrich the varsity Library as well as assist the students in their studies.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor described the University Accounting programme as very vibrant because of the demands placed before the students, which includes orderliness from both staff and students.
Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman, Calabar District of ICAN, Mr. Tony Ayie said it was the Institution’s pleasure and privilege to choose Unical among other listed Universities to be accorded the honour of a courtesy visit by the National President.
The highlights of the visit were the presentation of copies of academic journals to the Vice Chancellor and taking of a group photograph.
