House of Reps Summon Education Minister as ASUU Plans Strike For 14th March, 2013
It’s coming as a surprise to some of us that the House of Representative could actually take a matter of this nature very seriously after reading that this same House of Reps Rejected a Bill proposing the payment of monthly allowances to unemployed graduates in Nigeria.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced few days ago that they are planning to embark on a nationwide strike for the same reasons they have been going on strike actions for the past 5 years now.
The House of Representatives, has on Tuesday summoned the Minister of Education in Nigeria, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai and officials of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in other to avert the impending strike by the union.
In a motion brought to the floor of the House by Representative by Bashir Babale, PDP, Kano, who said that it is becoming worrisome that university lecturers would have to be embarking on strikes to force the government to meet her obligations on issues that have been agreed upon in the best interest of the nation’s tertiary education.
In the interest of the nation’s education sector, Bashir Babale did urged and encouraged the House to quickly intervene with a view to avert the impending strike which ultimatum expires in nine days.
Honorable Osai Osai of PDP, Delta, who did seconded the motion went further to state that without proper education, Nigeria’s democracy cannot survive.
He also stated the obvious when he raised a point that if the university education collapses, it will affect other sectors in the nation.
We hope the Reps can do everything they could to avert this looming nationwide strike by ASUU.
