Grammatical Error: Should We Laugh, Simply Correct Or Even Do Both??
Every word in English can be classified into a category called that word’s part of speech. A word’s part of speech determines the role it plays in conveying meaning. For example, we know that nouns name people, places, things, and ideas, also Verbs name actions like run, walk, and so on. You want to make sure you’re using the right part of speech at the right time.
But at a point we could interchange them accidentally or purposely, placing one for other and as a result the construction coupled with the execution could be a disaster, first to the listener then to the speaker.
Grammatical errors are usually not forgiven when you are writing examinations or giving a formal speech. This is why it is a good idea to verify your grammar when writing speeches or preparing for exams.
We remember the NSCDC Boss he is famous for “My Oga at the Top”, “I cannot categorically tell you”. Even till now I still laugh about it, should this be so? should we have considered probably he was under pressure at that point in time or whether he was just over confident.
Even during another interview/speech, these words were uttered and may not leave our minds anytime soon
- My fellow widows.
- The president was once a child and the senators were once a children.
- My heart feels sorry for these children who have become widows by losing their parents for one reason or the other
Remember it takes a person few seconds or even less than to think of a response to a questions, especially during interviews or while giving a speech.
In my secondary school a friend made this statement that disrupted the class for a while “Look at those birds they’ve big” we laughed till we could laugh no more, as at last week we still mocked him and this happened over eight years ago.
The most recent one though, some months ago This was said by a prominent fellow “I pray to entire people of Kano over the tragic fire outbreak at Sabon Gari, market. May their lost be replenished”.
Should I say these ones were victims of circumstances or they just wanted to voice out? I feel those that are grammatically sound amongst us should probably avoid laughing or maybe after laughing correct the error made by those around us.
In similar fashion, we see a lot of people on Social Media making so many grammatical errors in their posts. For me, people in this group have no excuses. They are connected to the internet already and these days when you can easily verify correct grammar online, they have no excuses.
Though we have the Nigerian grammar, even those amongst us that claim to be sound may still be saying these, We say “am coming” meanwhile we are on our way out, we also say “remember me your name” instead of remind me your name.
No one is an island of knowledge, but there is always a place of correction especially with love.
