FUTO To Access N2.6bn FG Allocation For Capital Projects – VC

The Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri, is to access over N2.6 billion allocation from the Federal Government for the execution of capital projects in the institution.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chigozie Asiabaka, disclosed this on Wednesday at the 32nd matriculation ceremony for the 2013/2014 academic session of the university.

Asiabaka said the allocation was in fulfillment of government’s agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to systematically beef up infrastructure in universities.

He said that the provision of additional infrastructure in the university would improve the quality of teaching, learning, research and other services.

He said that the university matriculated 5,075 students as against the over 30,000 who applied to the institution as their first choice in the last Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

He said that the admission process into the institution had been strengthened and made more transparent since his assumption office in June 2011, through stringent adherence to laid down guidelines by the university senate.

Asiabaka said his administration had created a culture of excellence to improve the welfare of students, and reiterated the resolve of the institution on zero tolerance for all social vices.

“The university will not hesitate to invoke relevant sanctions on culprits to preserve our drive of ensuring the sanctity of this citadel of learning.

“I charge our new students to shun all enticements to irresponsible and unwholesome life-style and anti-social activities like examination malpractice, cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, drug addiction, fighting, and extortion,’’ he said. (NAN)
