FUNAAB Students Protest SUG President’s Detention By Police
There was a peaceful protest earlier today at Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta as students of the university protested an alleged injustice against the President of the Students’ Union of the school. The protest resulted in a prolonged traffic gridlock at camp junction.
It was gathered that the SUG president Comrade Olajumoke Olawal, popularly known as “Hollar Hollar” was arrested and detained on Tuesday (yesterday) when he went to Obantoko Police Station on being called upon to help a lecturer that was in detention at the station. The lecturer was detained following an encounter with some Ogun State Traffic Compliance & Enforcement Corp (TRACE) officials when they attempted to remove the lecturer’s vehicle plate number.
On getting to the station, the SUG President was accused of being the Head cultist in Funaab and the DPO said “he had been looking for him for a very long time in Funaab”. All efforts to get the police officers to listen to him was to no avail.
It was until the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) called to the DPO that the student leader was released.
This led to the protest this morning, which started around 7am. The SUG used the Students Union Bus to block the Federal road at camp. No vehicular movements were allowed. The SUG President addressed the students and told them what he faced at the police station at the hands of the policemen. The SUG executives demanded for apology from the Commissioner of Police as well as the Police Public Relations Officer of Ogun state command.
The Police PRO, Ogun State command, Muyiwa Adejobi explained that Ogun state Headquarters (Eleweran) just heard about the way they maltreated the FunaabSU President and that he was surprised that such would happen, since it was Funaab that built the Police station close to Fajol where the student leader was detained. He said he had apologised to the SUG Excos and he would also apologize to Funaab students.
“On behalf of the Commissioner of Police and over 8,000 police personnel in Ogun state, we apologize for what happened yesterday and such would never happen again and the incident will be investigated”
About an hour into the protest, the SUG President tried to move the students to the Mancot Park to continue the protest and that students should leave the Federal road, some students followed him, while Majority stayed at camp junction and prevented any vehicular movement, which according crippled traffic flow as far as Moore Junction, close to Abiola way.
TRACE Ogun State has also been asked not to come near Funaab, as they were the cause of the incident that happened.
