Delta State Witholds Salaries Of Principal, 46 Teachers For Being Absent

Personally, I like this kind of developments as that’s what we need to bring about development in the Nigerian Education sector. I had the opportunity to serve in a Village school in Oyo State and I saw the way Teachers do things there. They come to school not earlier than 10am and leave as soon as it 12:30pm. They hardly go to the class to teach students and whenever they step into their classes, they pack them out to their farms to work.

I can write a book on my experience there. If every other state can emulate the Delta state Government on this, things would get better. I’m aware it has been done in Edo State before too.

Read the main story :

A Principal of a secondary school and 46 other teachers and non teaching staff, mostly located in remote villages are in soup as the Delta State Commissioner for Education has ordered for the immediate stoppage of their salaries for absenteeism, following unscheduled visit to the schools.

State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, said he had “directed the Permanent Secretary, Post Primary Education Board, to immediately stop the salaries of 47 teaching and non-teaching staff of two secondary schools for absenting themselves from school.”

The Commissioner in two separate letters to the Permanent Secretary at the Board headquarters on his unscheduled visits to the affected schools where he found the staff absent from their duty post.

He said that “before the salaries of the affected staff would be restored they would have to prove that they were truly bona-fide staff of the affected schools”, adding that “I have resorted to this line of action since many of them had refused to tow the line of honour by doing their work”.

Thirty six teaching and two non-teaching staff are from Ubeji secondary school Ubeji in Warri South local government area while nine including the Principal are from Ophorigbala secondary school, Ophorigbala in Ughelli South local government area of the State”.
