BUK Emerges 3rd in National Mathematics Competition
Bayero University Kano, BUK emerged 3rd in the National Mathematics Competition 2016. The event which took place from 3rd to 9th April, 2016 had a total of about 24 competing universities and 96 participants from the participating institutons. This was disclosed by the Head of Mathematics Department, Dr. Bashir Ali in a statement released on 4th May, 2016. According to the statement released by the Head of the Mathematics department, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) came first while University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and University of Uyo (UNIUYO) jointly emerged second.
The National Mathematics Competition which was organised by the National Mathematics Centre, Abuja, was an annual event being participated by students across Nigerian Universities. The Bayero University team that took part in the competition consisted of Dahiru Abdurrahman with registration number SCI/12/MTH/00002, who got a Gold Medal and took third position out of 96 participants while Sahura Badamasi Muhammad with registration number SCI/12/MTH/00027 and A’isha Ibrahim Sulaiman with registration number SCI/12/MTH/00126 bagged a Silver Medal each after emerging 9th and 27th, respectively. Also, Ibrahim Abdulfatah with registration SCI/12/MTH/00002 bagged a Bronze Medal after he emerged 38th in the competition. The leader of the team, according to the statement released was Dr. Ma‟aruf S. Minjibir.
The National Mathematical Centre Abuja was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria on January 1, 1988 although the decree (Decree No. 40) giving it a legal backing as a corporate body with perpetual succession and a common seal, was not promulgated until December 12, 1989.
The Centre was created to develop appropriate initiatives and resources of international standing for reawakening and sustaining interest in the mathematical sciences at all levels in Nigeria, and also as an adequate response to the dramatic decline in the production of teachers and specialists in the mathematical sciences at all levels.
