Benue State Teachers Call of Strike, Resume 7th July, 2014
The Nigerian Union of Teachers’ (NUT) in Benue State yesterday said public primary schools in the state would resume full academic activities on Monday next week.
Teachers of government-owned primary schools in the state embarked on strike eight months ago to demand payment of the minimum wage as being enjoyed by other workers.
State chairman of NUT, Godwin Anya, told Daily Trust yesterday in Makurdi that the schools would re-open on July 7, “following the resolution of the matter between the national body and state government in Abuja a few days ago”.
Anya said the government would pay the teachers two months salaries out of what they are being owed before the end of this week based on old rate, after which it will commence implementation of the minimum wage.
“We are resuming on July 7, because the state government has acceded to our demands. We hope they will honour the agreement,” he said.
