Akwa Ibom College Of Education Denies 27 Lecturers 2 Years Salaries

Akwa Ibom College of Education chapter of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), has alleged that 27 senior lecturers of the institution have been denied salaries for two years.

This allegation is contained in open letter signed by the union’s Chairman, Mrs Gloria Inyang and her secretary, Mr Iboro Ukpong, to the Gov. Godswill Akpabio,

In the letter, the union said that the 27 academic staff were chief, principal and senior lecturers, whose names had been removed from voucher of the college without justification.

The union stated that these senior lecturers were pillars for the success of the next round of accreditation of courses in the institution.

“They have neither been served retirement letters nor paid salaries for almost two years even though they are still performing their duties creditably.

“The premature disengagement of this calibre of staff from the classroom will spell a lot of consequences for the college,” the union stated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the letter was titled, “Complete your transformation of College of Education, Afaha Nsit and bequeath a legacy: Approve 65 years retirement age”.

The union argued that the 65 years retirement age was approved since 1999, published in the 2008 edition of Public Service Rules and again carried in Government’s circular in 2010.

“We pray sir, that you authorise the formalisation of retirement age of Academic Staff of the College of Education, Afaha Nsit at 65 years,” the union pleaded.

The union urged that the affected staff, who have not been paid salaries from the two years, be accommodated in this gesture.

The union stated that the college, which was at the verge of becoming a degree awarding institution, could not afford to lose the services of such high calibre staff.
