ACEONDO To Receive Nigeria’s Best COE Award- Provost

Adeyemi College  of Education, Ondo State, ACEONDO is set to receive Nigeria’s best College Of Education award, according to the institution’s Provost, Prof. Olukoya Ogen. The award is set to take place on the 23rd of June, 2018 in Kaduna State.

This news was made public in a statement by the institution’s provost on the school’s official website during an address delivered at the 8th Annual National Conference of the Institution’s School of Education, which held in the College on Tuesday May 22, 2018.

In addition, Prof. Ogen also disclosed that the event, expected to attract the presence of eminent personalities from across the length and breadth of the country including past and incumbent presidents of the country, all the 36 state Governors, Members of the National Assembly among others, would also featured the presentation of the award of Best Provost in Nigeria in year 2017 to him by the Magazine.

The above information was disclosed by the Provost  in an address delivered at the 8th Annual National Conference of the Institution’s School of Education, which held in the College on Tuesday May 22, 2018.

Describing the theme of the conference ” IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE CLASSROOM PRACTICES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN EDUCATION” as apt and timely, the Provost congratulated the organisers, stating that the choice of the theme, which is in consonance with the vision of his administration, would enhance academic advancement in the College and proffer solutions to some of the challenges facing educational sector in the country.

The College administrator emphasized the importance of digital technology and innovation in contemporary world, and therefore, tasked education planners and policy makers on the need to ” move away from analog to more innovative strategies, ” stating that the step would  promote efficiency, increase human capacity development and enhance productivity.

Prof. Ogen lauded the Dean, School of Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Antonia Blessing Loto, for sustenance of the hosting of the annual conference and assured that his administration would continue to work for the progress and advancement of the institution.

Earlier in her address of welcome, the Dean, School of Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Antonia  Loto, stated that the theme of the conference was chosen in order ” to afford stakeholders the opportunity to partake in the development of education in Nigeria “.

Describing the classroom as “the most sensitive laboratory to test the sustainability and functionality of any innovation” the education expert, therefore, urged teachers to always put their expertise at work during the teaching- learning process.

Speaking further on the conference she expressed optimism that presentations and recommendations during the conference will open a new vista of opportunities to in-service, pre-service, teachers / educators and other stakeholders in the education project as regards the implementation of innovative classroom practices for sustainable development in Nigeria “.

In a keynote address presented at the conference by a one- time Acting Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University ( EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria, Prof. Olufemi Victor Adeoluwa on the topic entitled : ” INNOVATIVE CLASSROOM PRACTICE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN EDUCATION- THE WAY FORWARD”, he described the Classroom as “a learning space, a room in which both children and adult learn ” noting that the concept of education for sustainable development ” which has been a learning process over the years, has helped  in equipping stakeholders in education with paradigms necessary to achieve economic prosperity and civic responsibility, while restoring the living systems necessary for life sustenance. “

The University lecturer also spoke expensively on classroom practices, innovations in classroom practices, benefits of innovative classroom practices as well as challenges of implementation of innovative classroom practices, and gave four recommendations, which he said would “help in attending to fundamental challenges bedeviling our attempts at enhancing innovative classroom practices in Nigeria.”

He listed the recommendations to include the need for more teachers to join party politics, provision of research report by professional bodies and institutions of higher learning to educational agencies and Ministries in charge of education, utilization of mobile learning techniques by teachers as well as the involvement of learners in lesson delivery and adoption of learner -centre approach method in teaching by teachers.

Also in a lead paper presented at the conference on the topic entitled : ” IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE CLASSROOM PRACTICES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN EDUCATION ” by a lecturer in the Department of Special Education and Curriculum Studies, ACE Ondo, Dr. Sam Oluseyi Oyekan, he highlighted the importance of functional education and described innovation as ” the creative applications of new ideas, processes or ways to resolve specific challenges with requisite value addition and efficiency for quality human life”.

Dr. Oyekan also spoke on necessity for innovative Classroom Practices, challenges of implementation of innovative classroom practices, conceptual frameworks for innovative classroom practices, implementation strategy of innovative classroom practices as well as prospects of innovative classroom practices for sustainable development.

On ways by which teaching- learning process could be enhanced in schools,  the ACE lecturer, emphasized the use of appropriate  technology  and provision of comprehensive curriculum ” that will stimulate critical thinking, creative ideas, enterprising skills, and ethical practices as vital factors in nurturing competent graduates with suitable technology-based instruction for the labour market” he remarked.

The highlight of the event, which held at the Obongawan Ekong Lecture theatre, was the presentation of gift to a retired former lecturer in the institution’s School of Education, Dr Gboyega Bolaji Olaniyi. The gift was presented by Dr. Sam Oluseyi Oyekan and received on behalf of the awardee by Dr. (Mrs.) Obasoro Caroline Babasola, Acting Director, Counselling and Human Development Centre, ACE, Ondo.

Eminent personalities from within and outside the college who attended the event include the institution’s Deputy Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde; Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede; Bursar, Mr. Ganiyu Abdul; Acting Librarian, Mr. Akinade Awoyemi.

Also in attendance were Deans and Directors, Heads of Departments and Units, members of academic staff from various schools in the College, principals of secondary schools from Ondo City, students from Adeyemi College of Education Demonstration School, students and staff if the College from various units including the Information and Public Relations Unit, Centre for Educational Technology (CET) and Music Department among others.
