KWARAPOLY Students Protest Shooting Of Colleague By Police Escorts, Shut Down Ilorin
Economic and social activities were, Monday, paralysed in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, following demonstration by students of Kwara State Polytechnic over the killing of one of their colleagues by a police escort.
An Accountancy student of the polytechnic was feared dead following gunshots from the police escort of one of the leading banks in the state, leading to violent protests from his colleagues.
Vanguard learnt that the student was about to board a vehicle to the school at the Post Office area of the town when he was suddenly shot severally on his legs. He later bled to death.
The vehicle which the deceased would have boarded was said to have been stopped by the policeman who was escorting the bank’s bullion van before the suspect suddenly started firing gun shots which hit the student on his legs severally.
However, the aggrieved students consequently went on the rampage to protest the incident, leading to total paralysis of commercial and other social activities in Ilorin and its environs.
The incident which occurred at about 2.10p.m led to stampede at the popular Murtala Mohammed Way, Post Office area among others, leading to traffic logjam as motorists were unable to move due to born fire by thestudents on the major roads.
An eye witness who identified himself as John Abodunrin, however, told Vanguard that the policeman attempted to shoot the tyre of the vehicle which was carrying the student, pointing out that his gun was not deliberately aimed at the deceased.
“The student was inside a taxi cab when the bullion van belonging to one of the foremost banks sped past us with its siren on. However, the bullionvan suddenly stopped the vehicle. The policeman in an attempt to demobilise the vehicle, shot at the tyre but unfortunately, the student, Ahmed Dayo, a National Diploma student in the Department of Accountancy was killed. The bullets shattered one of his legs leading to loss of blood.”
It was further gathered that bullion van operators did not attempt to rescue the injured student who was immediately taken to a nearby privatehospital, where he was only given first aid treatment and then referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
The driver and other policemen in the vehicle reportedly zoomed off to escape from the mob which took over the streets soon after the incident.
Contacted, the state police command’s spokesman, DSP Fabode Olufemi, said he was yet to receive any official report on the incident.
