AUN Plans To Open Smart Library In May
The American University of Nigeria (AUN) is to commission its newly built ‘smart’ library in May this year aimed at making education accessible and less expensive, President of the Institution, Dr. Margee Ensign, has said.
Ensign, in a statement said this innovation embarked upon by the university is what is obtained in advanced countries as such, its domestication in the institute will make it at par with its contemporaries worldwide.
“Smart library is basically like a smart phone. It’s multi-functional, efficient, has more services, and because it deals with e-resources, it doesn’t require as much space. Instead, we have space to add more services that were once taken up by hard copy books, resulting in greater efficiency and effectiveness,” he said.
As winners of last year’s Library Association Award for Innovation offered by the American International Library Projects, the university is currently leading the movement towards digital libraries around the world, he said.
For Nigeria, as one of the fastest growing countries in the world, he said, technology will be crucial in meeting the need to educate and train the youth, adding that “education is the key to helping people provide for themselves and their families. It’s the key to making Nigeria and the world a better place.”
The statement quoted the university’s librarian Amed Demirhan as saying, “The new smart library will advance the application of information technology to organizational structure, space and collection, as such the new library is designed to support the digital e-library.” Source: Daily Trust Newspaper
