The federal government is to employ 1,000 additional teachers for Federal ‘Unity’ Colleges, the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has said.
Wike disclosed this Monday at a meeting with principals of the federal colleges in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the minister said the aim was to address the deficit of teachers in the schools to improve learning and teaching.
Wike, who also stated that government was making efforts to improve technical and vocational education, directed the principals of Federal Technical Colleges to submit the lists of requirements in their schools.
He said they should make their requests in the area of physics, chemistry and biology laboratories as a first step in developing technical and vocational education.
“For those in technical schools, submit to us just two departments that can be immediately furnished,” he said.
Wike said the essence of the meeting with the principals was to explore ways of improving quality of teaching and learning in schools.
He said there would be no technological and economic advancement without technical and vocational education. “This is a serious drive to revive the sector,” he added. The minister later presented six technical colleges from the geo-political zones with some science equipment.
The principals listed the problems and needs of their various schools which the minister promised to address urgently.
