FG proposes 5-year Jail Term For Exams Fraudsters

 THE Federal Government has challenged the newly inaugurated nominees to the board of West African Examination Council (WAEC) to end the menace of examination malpractices and ensure integrity of WAEC certificate.

The government also proposed stiffer penalties for those involved in examination malpractice, including a fine of N200,000 or five years jail terms for all forms of malpractices in WAEC examinations.

Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, spoke on Thursday in Abuja, while inaugurating the governing councils and boards of four parastatals under Federal Ministry of Education.

“With regard to the nominees to the board of WAEC, my charge to you is simple: you must continue to ensure that the integrity of WAEC and its examinations is not compromised under any circumstances,” he said.

The boards and councils inaugurated were the that of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN); National Institute of Education Planners and Administrators (NIEPA); the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Committee of the West African Examinations Council (Nigeria) WAEC.

Wike assured members of the board that the Federal Government remained committed to meeting all its obligations to WAEC.

He urged members of the council and boards of parastatals being inaugurated to bring their wealth of experience to bear on the effective administrative of the institutions.

He reminded them that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan considered education as a critical factor in the attainment of national development. Source: Tribune Newspaper
