11 Nigerians Get Chevening Scholarships, 2014 Application Starts

Eleven Nigerians from different spheres of life have been awarded Chevening scholarships funded by the Government of the United Kingdom, in programmes ranging from Medical Research, International Law and Finance and Accountancy.

The programme makes awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses at universities in the UK. This year is the 30th anniversary of Chevening scholarships.

11 Nigerians Get Chevening Scholarships

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, at a reception for the beneficiaries in Abuja Tuesday night, disclosed that 3,000 applications were received from Nigerians for the 2013 scholarships.

He added that the programme was about “brain gain” and not “brain drain” as the beneficiaries were expected to return to Nigeria at the end of their studies to use their knowledge and skill to help develop Nigeria.

Pocock noted that about 1,050 Nigerians have benefited from a Chevening Scholarship and were in positions of leadership across the country. An alumni association was set up in Lagos in 2011.

“Chevening scholars share the qualities of ambition, drive and leadership potential, a commitment to change and organisational development, and a talent for innovation and creativity. With an excellent record of rising to positions of leadership in their respective professions, Chevening Scholars remain influential friends of the UK,” he added.

The Chevening programme was launched in 1983 and had developed into a prestigious international scheme, attracting a wealth of high-calibre applicants from about 116 countries worldwide. There are over 41,000 Chevening alumni all around the world.

Meanwhile, applications for 2014/2015 Chevening scholarships would  open in Nigeria at the beginning of September 2013.
