Up to 1.1 million JAMB candidates will not gain admission into tertiary institutions for the 2016/2017 academic session. This information is according to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission. He said that only 400,000 candidates will be able to get admission into tertiary institutions this academic year.

There are about 60 Private Universities, 38 State Universities, 37 Federal Universities, in Nigeria. We also have about 25 Federal Polytechnics and 40 State Polytechnics as well as many private polytechnics and Colleges of Education in Nigeria. Even with this number of tertiary institutions, only about 400,000 are sure of getting admission this year.

1.1Million JAMB Candidates Won't Get Admission

In his words, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission disclosed that 1.1 million students seeking admission into Nigerian universities will have their hope dashed, as only 400,000 out of the 1.5 million candidates that sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in 2016 will gain admission

He also said: “I am always happy when a new university comes on board; what that means is that we are expanding and we are opening up access.’’

What this means is that the admission capacity of all our tertiary students combined is way below what we need. They can only admit just above 35% of candidates seeking admission through JAMB.

One million, one hundred thousand candidates – the number of JAMB candidates that will not gain admission for the next session.
